Hope & Glory Jeans Section:

Hope And Glory was founded in 1989 by Jo Hopcraft and Marc Schneiderman. The two partners had previously worked together for 3 years at Parkes Clothing where they were in charge of the Casual Wear division. Johanna Hopcraft has a background in the fashion industry having studied fashion design at Southend College alongside such luminaries as Steven Linnard, Dave Ghan from Depeche Mode and Alison Moyet. Marc Schneiderman studied accounting and economics at Manchester University and followed up his interest in fashion when he met Jo.

In the late 1980’s, the fashion industry in England was relatively conservative. Nearly all men went to work in a suit or jacket and trouser. Casual wear was just beginning to become an acceptable fashion item. At Parkes Clothing, everybody wore formal clothing. It was very rare for any of the employees to wear jeans, let alone a sweatshirt. This was the norm throughout the country. The Parkes business was based on the supply of suits, trousers and shirts and was the leading fashion company in England in its day.

Around about this time, things started to change in men’s dress sense. New companies were emerging that focussed purely on casual wear. Jo and Marc decided that it was time to start up on their own and therefore in July 1989 they set up Hope and Glory Clothing Ltd. Magazines like The Face and I.D. were concentrating heavily on this new look. There was an air of optimism in the industry and Hope and Glory were featured in a fashion shoot for The Face as one of the emerging new labels.

Jo and Marc established the company from their flat in Muswell Hill. For the first years they worked alone designing, manufacturing and distributing from home. Weekly they would receive deliveries that would completely fill every room. These had to be sent out quickly before the next delivery arrived. It was chaotic and enjoyable at the same time. At first they both did consultancy work in order to survive. After a year of working day and night, they were able to take on their first employee, Simon Harris. Very soon the company outgrew its premises and moved to a 2 room office/warehouse in Muswell Hill. In fact the main office doubled up as the warehouse and often Marc and Simon found their desks had disappeared under a sea of garments.

The company was rapidly establishing itself as a leading design company. The garments designed had a distinct exclusive British handwriting. This has remained to the current day. The Mod revival was well underway and Hope and Glory was at the forefront of design. Very soon the company took on further offices within their building until it had 8 separate units all joined by corridors and alleyways. The ethos of the company established then remains today. The aim has always been to design leading edge clothing and to be able to supply it at a reasonable price. The quality of design and garments is never compromised. Customers feel that they can wear Hope and Glory clothing and be at the forefront of design without feeling out of place.

During the early days, Hyper Hyper in Kensington High Street was the leading shop for clothing in England. It consisted of small units housing numerous young design company’s. People came from all over the world to shop there and at its sister shop Kensington Market across the road . Hope and Glory opened its first retail outlet there in 1990 managed by a wonderful character called Bob. He was an original member of Tempole Tudor and his piece de resistance was being able to walk the length of the corridor of the shop on his hands. Weekly Jo and Marc would be rushing to their factories in order to get newly designed garments into the shop for Saturday. The retail side of the company was proving to be a major success and went a long way to establishing the company’s name not only in England but also worldwide.

Slowly but surely the company grew. More retail shops were opened and the wholesale business was expanded. Jo and Marc’s principal aim was to remain independent. They were and never have been interested in expansion through the acquisition of a financial partner. They have a belief that by remaining independent, they have been able to design what they like rather than be tied to financial constraints usually associated with financial partnerships. This belief still stands today. Whilst a large majority of the companies established at the same time as Hope and Glory have foundered, Jo and Marc remain at the forefront of the still 100% independent company.

The first ever standalone Hope and Glory shop was opened in Nottingham in 1990 and was soon followed by a unit in Covent Garden. The modern Hope and Glory has 3 retail units and 70 wholesale accounts. In the year 2000 the company finally outgrew its original premises and moved into what was an original film studio in Muswell Hill. This houses all departments, from design through to distribution. It is a testimony to the experience of working for Hope and Glory that a large majority of its former employees still work in the industry. Whilst the company may have grown in size and stature, the ethos of honesty, integrity and design originality stands as much today as it did 15 years ago.

Heterophobia ? addressing a controversial mannequin
Does the dominance of gay fashion designers suggest an endemic heterophobic propensity by the fashion illuminati which is manifest in its most insidious form by the pervasive tendency to corrupt the female body image by persisting with anorexic “de-feminised” models as a paradigm of perfection ultimately undermining the male/female synergy? … or perhaps the fashion [...]

Fashion personas a dated phenomenon?
Are fashion personas a dated phenomenon, Girogio Armani, Roberto Cavalli, Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Yohji Yamamoto and so on… ?
