Ralph Lauren established himself in 1967 with the Polo label, an instantly successful line of ties because it was in direct opposition to the narrow ties and conventional styles of the time. Lauren designed wide, handmade ties using unexpected, flamboyant, opulent materials. The ties quickly became a menswear status item.
