Certainly within the UK (probably Europe and possibly the World).
He's able to make it look like he's not trying to be fashionable (appart from a handful of 'desperate' publicity styles - His & Hers Gucci leather cat suits).
Can't think of anyone who comes close - Justin Timberlake or Kanye West?? But not really close to DB!! |

Haven't posted for a while. Glad you're all still at it. Good question.
Beckham- no way. As stated, maybe in England. Stateside however you may be hard pressed to find people who even know who he is, despite his deserved fame.
We need to differentiate gender on this one. Might i suggest JayZ and james bond for the guys, and gwen stephanie, jackie onassis, betty page, and marilyn munroe. for the gals. |

He's a monster, no doubt. But that doesn't qualify him as the ultimate fashion icon. His international fame is undermined in the states by his being a soccer/football player. A 4th tier sport here. He'll have to get in line behind Lebron James, T.O., Tiger Woods and all the other highly marketable athletes that garner so much attention in the U.S. media.
Of course, a fashion icon need not appeal to the U.S. market. The ultimate one should. Beckham falls short in my book. |

Bollocks. He is known by everyone over the globe, have you seen his following in Japan?
No doubts about it Beckham is stylish and he has built that reputation up over the years. Obviously because he is with Victoria is a big factor on how big he has got. It is the perfect relationship for the media & press! |

Bollocks? You based in the U.K.? I've already aknowledged his fame, style, and marketability. My point is that as a soccer player, his appeal here will be limited to a far more narrow market than it would be in a "soccercentric" nation. In short. Americans like soccer players, but not as much football, basketball, and baseball players. You know how well we Americans can ignore what the rest of the world is on.javascript:emoticon(' ')
Ultimate is a strong word. with so many fashion icons whos looks have transcended cultures and even generations. How does Beckham qualify for ultimate? M. Munroe, A.hepburn- dead for decades, their image/style is still selling, even trancending death.
Beckham is a famous athlete. He will be remembered for his contributions on the field. Not for fashion. |

Yeah im based in the UK. I was commenting on your words were you said 'Stateside however, you may be hard pressed to find people who even know who he is.'
That would only be a very, very small minority. |

I know it's hard to believe. You would be suprised. Remember when that movie Bend it like Beckham came out ?(of course you do). Americans were all like- 'bend it like who?!' Thats when he came to the attention of the u.s. masses. If you were into sports you prob. already had an idea, or knew who he was. But the average 'mercan needed an off beat cute film to get it.
And still many don't know of him, or simply don't care enough to remember. More likely the later.
Check the stats. soccer viewing (not to be confused with playing) falls behind the big 3 (mentioned earlier in this thread) as well as nascar and even golf. Like i said, hard to believe.
Dumb hinted at something feasable, he could get more attention from us if he phases off the soccer and plays a celebrity/entertainer/ guest judge card. |
